Welcome to Bilby the Bus

Welcome to Bilby The Bus! This is our very first blog post and we are very excited to share with you all the story behind Bilby, the buying process and the building and design aspects of our cool 1990’s Toyota Coaster. We are two business graduates from Melbourne who had an epic dream of travelling around Australia in a decked out bus. We had no experience in construction or electrical work and minimal knowledge of cars (just to keep in mind when reading the building process) and we wanted to complete this whole set up on a budget using mainly recycled goods.

The crazy journey began in September 2016 when we picked Bilby up from a bus company in Shepparton Victoria as a white and red 22 seater mini bus, he wasn’t anything special then, but we saw the potential straight away. Fast forward 8 months (and a few less dollars in the pocket) later and we had ourselves the most magical and unreal bus that way exceeded our expectations.

June this year we both resigned from our jobs, finished our university degrees and headed off on the adventure of a life time. That first drive out of Melbourne and first night in our bus was like nothing else, we will never forget that feeling of complete freedom! We are travelling indefinitely (until the money runs out) based on our forecasts, we will make the whole east coast before having to work and then on to Central Australia and Western Australia. We are currently 4 months in to our journey and have absolutely loved the awesome people we have met and the amount of support and questions we have received on our instagram, its pretty amazing to have so many like-minded people showing so much interest in our project and travel adventures. We wanted to start a blog to answer all the questions we’ve been receiving about the journey and to give insight into our favourite places around our beautiful country, we also want to personally track our own trip and be able to look back on this in the future.
